The Department of statistics was founded in 1950, currently having 13 teachers. It is one of the earliest founded departments in the national comprehensive universities and the only doctoral program in Northwest China. There are 6 professors, 4 associate professors and 3 lecturers (postdoctoral). At present, the department enrollsone “national four-young talent”, one “young talent” from the special support plan in Shaanxi Province and threeuniversity-level young talents.

After more than half a century of construction and several generations of teaching staff’s hard work, the Department of statistics has formed a team of teachers with reasonable age and academic background structure, whileachieving a high educational level. At present, the Department of statistics consists of two majors (Statistics and Quantitativeeconomics), three educational levels (undergraduate, master and doctor), and four researchfields (Econometric model and application, Economic information analysis and decision-making, Economic analytical method and application, Econometric analysis and application). Now it has developed into a discipline with high popularity in China (Statistics ranks 6th and Quantitative economics ranks 6th in the country).

In the era of big data, information technology is developing rapidly. With the continuous development of market economy and the gradual emergence of the quantitative trend in economics, statistics, as a methodology, is becoming more and more important. All sectors of society pay unprecedented attention to statistics. To meet the needs, the Department of statistics put forward the idea of "strengthening mathematical methods and highlighting the characteristics of economic statistics". The goal of training students is to "have good economic literacy, firmly grasp the basic theories and methods of statistics, skillfully use a variety of statistical software, and have the basic ability of data processing and statistical analysis". It is hoped that after graduation, students canpursue the profession of data collection, processing and analysis, economic detection and early warning in enterprises, institutions, and economic management departments, or engage in research and teaching in educational units.

The Department of statistics designs the curriculum scientifically and reasonably,while achieving diversified teaching methods and means. All professors and associate professors in the department can adhere to the teaching tasks of undergraduates, pay attention to cultivating students' practical application ability, and require students to understand the materials as well as applying them without textbooks. Since its establishment, the Department of statistics has trained many undergraduate, master, and doctoral graduates. These graduates mainly work in banks, securities companies, insurance companies and other financial institutions, government agencies, enterprises, and institutions. With their solid theoretical and practical knowledge, they give full play to their unique talentsduring working. Many people have become the backbone of their industry.

In the field of scientific research, teachers of the Department of statistics have long adhered to combining theory and practice, making great achievements in both theoretical research and applied research. In recent years, it has successively undertaken more than 40 national scientific research projects, such as "evaluation and management of sustainable development policies in ecologically fragile areas", "Measurement of kinetic energy for targeted poverty alleviation policies from the perspective of endogenous driving force and self-development ability, and study on countermeasures against poverty-returning". Thedepartment has not only published more than 1000 academic papers in some prominent journals, such asPNAS,Economic Letters,Statistical Research,The Journal of Quantitative & Technical Economics,The Economist, but also published more than 40 monographs and textbooks, such asApplied Statistics andEconometrics. More than 10 scholars have won Provincial and Ministerial Social Sciences and Soft Sciences Awards, and National Prize for Progress in Statistical Science and Technology. A number of experts and scholars with good teaching results and high academic achievements have emerged.
